This year's Student Code of Conduct includes new rules ads adjustments from the previous year. The focus is on positive interactions, a certain expectation for behaviors, new consequences and respect for others. The revised 2018-2019 Student Code of Conduct has a student bill of rights also including furthers details. Each city and cities within cities have a Board of Education ran by members. These members have a Superintendent for the School's Community District. As a concerned woman with many children she's cared for, helped birth, helped raise, disciplined, and more; I have seen some awful things with our youth at and/or related to schools. The School Board is doing the best they can. Our youth need help from everyone! We can't allow the things that are happening now, continue to happen. There are a few questions people had when I was discussing this topic.
There were concerns about some of the new rules (Ex: Point System, which I will discuss later in the blog) introduced this year applying to the younger grades (Pre-K to 1st or 2nd Grade). Children at that level are learning the new environment and people. It seems questionable to have them learning a Point System so technical at that stage. The new point system reminds me of a system we used in a juvenile treatment facility for teenagers called Rational/Cognitive Behavior Therapy/Training. Of course there were many differences, yet similarities as well. The school currently in discussion has a system like the one list below:
Level 1 = warning
Level 2 = parent meeting
Level 3 = investigation
Level 4 = removal
Addition to the young grades with this system, the older grades have it also. The older grades and schools as a whole need to have more security. Some of our schools have such a lack of security, anyone can just walk in, a surprising number of students are high or skipping school and people know this is occurring. Where is the security at a desk, at the door of the school, all day, until the last person leaves. Then, for additional safety measures add a second security guard. More than one person and pay extra if needed. This could all lead to more respect for our schools and districts.
Lastly, it hasn't been a major crisis in this area, but overall the rate has risen for the number of inappropriate sexual or non-sexual relationships between underage students and teachers. The teachers and underage students are engaging in some inappropriate behaviors such as, but not limited to sexting, sexual content in messages, sexual conversations, video messages sexual in nature and more. Some of these activities have occurred on school premises and even in some classrooms. How will our school board address this issue and the other ones listed above? Can there be an addendum to the 2018-2019 version or will we have to wait until an incident occurs? Definitely do not keep our concerns at the bottom of your list. Acknowledge them, us, yourselves, and most importantly, our children.
Peace & Love
